Unusual kimono models

We lived in Yokohama for a year and then in Tokyo from 1992 until we left in 1995 for Washington, for language training in preparation for a posting to Turkey. I had taken a lot of film pictures during our years in Tokyo, and know I scanned some of them, but for the life of me can’t find them anywhere in the world (and I mean that literally!). But upon seeing Bill Miller’s excellent captures of Tokyo, which brought back some great memories, I began searching my old files to see if I had anything, and found some pictures I had taken when we were posted to Okinawa from 2000 to 2003. I remember one of the trips to Tokyo quite well, to see old friends and haunts, because I managed to contract pneumonia there, being used to the hot climate in Okinawa and having nothing warm to wear up north.

Anyway, these are some pictures from the trips in 2001 and 2002, taken with my first digital camera. They’re not remarkable, but a nice memory of four years of our lives.

It does look so unusual and for that reason the image stands out nicely. A very lovely shot. V

We lived in Japan for one year in 1958, and I remember that they had a real fondness for blue eyes and blond hair. Looks like some things haven't changed in all those years. Nicely captured image of some interesting variations on a theme. Voted.

Interesting that none of the manikins have black hair.

Neat shot Helen - what strikes me is that the models don't look Japanese - love those kimonos, they are so elegant V

I do find the kimono to be very elegant. It is a shame our old pictures get lost and dispersed as we travel through life.

Beautiful, what a wonderful collection of kimonos. V

quite a sophisticated display

These are very colourful and oddly seem to provide as much coverage as the abayas.
The Ellisons29-Jan-2016 20:19
Great window shot! Did you wear kimonos in Japan like you wear abayas now.

the quirky quintet of mannequins does look more Western than Japanese...odd for Okinawa....look forward to more of your images from this time...

I like this photograph, color and composition, seem very real! V
