Symbol of Chefchaouen

This monument and ruins were situated just outside the city of Chefchaouen. I wish I could remember the significance, but they certainly bear a resemblance to the entryway pictured below. Tim seems to recall that the symbols on the entryway represent various religions (shell for Christianity, crescent moon for Islam and star for Judaism), but I don’t see all of those on the monument, just the shell.
