Fes, tannery dye vats and a black cat

We visited the enormous Chouara Tanneries in the Fes medina (old city), and these were the dye tanks for the skins, with a cat looking on for scale. Before going in here, the skins have to be soaked in lye (to appear in another picture when I do a complete gallery), the most hazardous part of the process. We also managed to pick up a few souvenirs we didn’t need during our visit.

I truly hate to post and run, but we are leaving in a few minutes for an eight-hour drive to the Sahara Desert, where we’ll spent the night in a tent (via camel) tomorrow night. We’ll be in a small town this evening, but I’m not too hopeful about an Internet connection there and certainly not in the desert. Anyway, the adventure continues, and I’ll catch up when back to civilization in Marrakech!

Posted earlier, the main means of transportation in the medina since cars are not allowed inside the walls:

Yes, the cat is a really nice touch here, gives it scale and focus. V.

Cute little black cat and I have wonder that it's paws will stain with all the dye. Interesting row of pattern. V

This is an excellent composition, I saw a TV show about Morroco that included the tanneries. V

What a different world - open dye vats above and the only transportation in town four legged animals. Try that in New York.

Stunning image with the cat for scale, really shows the size of these. v

It took awhile to locate the cat. I thought the vats were about the size of a paint can. They're huge. Vote.

a fine overview...it would seem most dyes are aimed at preserving a natural leather look...your Sahara excursion sounds fascinating..

It took me a while to find the cat! When I first looked at this I didn't think the tanks were that big. The cat sure does put it in perspective. V

At first I thought they were tubs of ice cream, and then I couldn't find the cat - I was assuming they were much smaller than they are. The cat is a good addition to provide scale.

These vats are enormous, now that I spotted the little black cat. Sounds like an desert adventure is forthcoming ! V

yes, couldn't see the cat at first

That black cat needs to be careful where it steps or it'll end up a brown or red cat! Very interesting shot of this industry, V.
