Nizwa Fort was constructed over the course of 12 years in the middle of the 17th century. It has a diameter of 45 meters, a height of 34 meters and a foundation that extends 30 meters into the ground. It recently underwent a total restoration and is surrounded by a castle built in the 9th century, next to the main mosque of the town.
We had been told by several Omanis that we should make the drive to Nizwa -- the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries -- as it was a spectacular place, and they were right. It’s also the gateway to a large mountain range that includes Oman’s highest peak, but unfortunately we had a flight to Salala in the south to catch in the early evening so couldn’t venture any farther than the historic town. On our next visit to Oman, that’s something else we want to do!
