This is Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe and three times as large as Luxembourg, with a dozen or more glaciers descending off its top and at least one active volcano smoldering underneath. I saw this through a dirty aircraft window as we were approaching the airport in Reykjavik and thought at first it was some kind of gigantic cloud bank ;-).
