Mada'in Saleh, Qasr al-Farid tomb

The Qasr al-Farid tomb, or "lonely castle," so named as it is completely isolated from the other tombs, was pretty spectacular. It rises four stories in height and was cut into a sandstone outcrop. This tomb was left unfinished but is the most iconic sight of Mada'in Saleh.

Mada’in Saleh is one of Saudi Arabia’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city was settled by the Nabataeans, whose capital was Petra in Jordan, in the first century B.C., and most of the 131 rock-cut tombs date to the first century A.D.

Awesome place and photo. Having been to Petra, I knew it was Nabatean the minute I saw this although I had never heard of this place before. ~BV~

What a fantastic and interesting find. Two thousand years old, carved in sandstone, and it still looks like it was carved yesterday. Amazing symmetry. Very intriguing place. Vote.

Amazing how it is carved into the rock!

This is spectacular carved out of the solid rock and as you point out, sitting all on its own. Beautiful capture. V.

What an interesting place. Did you get on the other side of the huge rock. I find that it is hidden from the side that you shot. Don't know if this was by design or not. You sure are showing a different side from over there. Very interesting. V.

Nice capture. This unique tomb is known as Qasr Al-Fareed.
Local authorities took wise decision to handover Madain Salih to UNESCO, now one can see names of tombs there, with graded paths.
