We were standing outside Deera Souk trying to figure out a good way to photograph it when this man came up to me and asked me to take his picture. I was flabbergasted and not sure I had heard right, but I had and he meant it (and I had his express permission, which is required here). He posed and smiled, shook my hand and said, “Welcome to Saudi Arabia,” and was gone. He didn’t even want to look at the picture. I’m sure he had no idea how grateful a stranger was for this kind gesture. I’m no expert, but my feeling is that he might be Yemeni, judging by his head gear.
