Antoni Tąpies, who died in 2012, was one of Barcelona's best known artists and was inspired by Surrealism. The building was designed by Lluķs Domčnech i Montaner in 1879 and was the first domestic building in Barcelona to be constructed with iron. Antoni Tąpies created the sculpture crowning the building titled "Nśvol i cadira" (Cloud and Chair, 1990). This sculpture represents a chair jutting out of a large cloud. The chair, a recurring motif in Tąpies work, alludes to a meditative attitude and to aesthetic contemplation.
