Another stab at the water drops

I'm sort of baffled by the focus; I was aiming for the drop, which I guess I managed to get, but maybe the berries were arranged differently from what I thought ;-). NOTE: I went out and looked at (and photographed) the berries again today. In fact, the small one in the center is the furthest forward, which is why it's OOF (which makes sense, but it doesn't appear to be first in line to me in the picture). The berry on the left is the furthest back in the line of three (which at least in this image, doesn't appear to be the case).

One again taken in rain, but no umbrella to contend with this time!

The answer to the puzzle:

water droplets are a fascinating subject and lots of good colour there too

From a technical point of view a very surprising and confusing image, but nevertheless a very beautiful one !! V

I like the shot overall, there is some fine sharpness; but I read that a left side focus issue is due to a misalignment of the AF module on some D 800's. V

The drop is sharp. The 105 Macro has a "very very very" narrow DOF at f/2.8 so it can produce an "interesting" result from what you remember the scene looking like. If you were 3 feet away from the berries, the DOF would only be about 1/2 inch.

Its a great image of the berries and drops, great focus. v

Spot on excellent focus with the water droplet! Maybe you didn't plan on this; however, I think this is the best focal point. V

An interesting phenomenon. It looks like the central berry is to close to your lens, and its colour reflected onto the left berry has changed its overall appearance. The left berry is actually quite sharp. v

You certainly nailed it - Depth of field can be tricky. The OOF in the front is closer to the camera - that's why the topmost one is more in focus. Also, if there is even the slightest breeze the whole focus area changes in closeups like this.

My very favourite today Helen...superb! V

Yes, it looks like the middle berry is OOF, but the ones close to and far away are in focus, except the one way at the back. I thought it was an optical illusion, but the stalk of the middle berry is in front of the third one, which suggests that focus plane isn't flat in this picture. Very strange.

Maybe not what you were looking for, but I love the image and the reflections in the droplet...v.
