The House of Blackheads was originally built in 1334 for the city's guilds. Over time it was solely occupied by the Blackheads, a guild of unmarried foreign merchants whose name derives from their patron, St. Maurice (often depicted as a Moor). This marvelous building was bombed in 1941 and demolished by the Soviets after the war. It was rebuilt in 1999, part of a restoration project celebrating the city's 800th anniversary.
