Apparently Bem Jozsef was a Pole who was involved in the Hungarian revolution of 1848 as well as an uprising in Poland and activities in Portugal. After the failure of the 1848 revolution against the Hapsburgs, he fled to the Ottoman Empire, converted to Islam and became the Ottoman governor of Aleppo.
