I can't remember the exact process, but I read at the museum that they used to produce these works of art in ceramic rather than on a canvas (according to the museum catalog for one piece, "terra cotta slab picture with metallic oxide engobe, painting)." I had to finally give up trying to get the frame perfect, but hopefully you get the idea (and can overlook that ;-)).
