Here’s the answer to Dave’s riddle this week:
First, and easiest, is the Wind Direction Indicator. That's the wind cone.
Second, and not quite as obvious, are the Landing Strip Indicators. These are used to
show pilots in the air and on the ground the direction in which landings and takeoffs are
to be made. Landing strip indicators are always installed in pairs, and in this image
they are the straight sections that extend outward from the center of the circle. They
are also installed to be parallel to the runway.
Third, (okay, I lied, it’s a three-for-one!) are the Traffic Pattern Indicators.
These control the pattern of air traffic when there is any variation from a normal left-hand
pattern. In this image the Traffic Pattern Indicators are the bottom portion of the “L”.
This circle is 100 ft (30.5m) in diameter. The white concrete panels are 3 ft (1m) wide.
