Ranald MacDonald's Grave State Park

Curlew, WA

Ranald MacDonald (February 3, 1824 – August 24, 1894) was the first native English-speaker to teach the English language in Japan, and his grave is Washington State’s smallest State Park, located near the northern border of Washington State.

MacDonald was a sailor, a gold miner, a writer, an explorer, and (briefly) a teacher. Relatively unknown to the citizens of his own country, MacDonald is fondly remembered by the Japanese for the role he played in helping them learn more about the English language and Western culture.
