Alle fire livsstadier (æg, larve, puppe og imago) lever i elmetræer. Efter overvintring klækkes ægget, og larven lever af blomsterknopper og manna. Den voksne sommerfugl lever især af honningdug, og den kan observeres i elmetræernes kroner, når den sværmer i solskin.
