This is the FINAL (fifth) posting for the Series "ONE HOUR IN THE LIFE OF A ONE-DAY OLD COMMON LOON CHICK" (See previous four postings for description, notes and the initial images, 1a, 1b, 1 & 2....18).

Image 23: Final image of this series showing two broken egg shells left behind in the abandoned nest. The eggs shells and the attached membranes appeared to be quite tough, thus it probably took considerable effort for the young to break out.

The foregoing series has been a light-hearted and perhaps somewhat pretentious overview of the accomplishments and activities of the one day old Loon chick which hatched Friday June 13th. Its sibling hatched some 12 to 18 hours later, after which the whole family left the nest area. Yesterday, June 21,I spotted the whole family, Mom, Dad and two young swimming and feeding in a bay opposite from where the nest was located.
