Three shots in this series. First, wings spread as it forages for food. This is reportedly done for balance as well as to entice small fish to seek shelter in the shade of the wings.

Scouting for prey in the receding tide waters. Note the shade provided by the spread wings.

Several times I saw it scoop a circular swat of water with its beak in its endevour to catch a small fish or crab etc.
