COMMON LOONS. Continuing with the chronology of the young loons. In the following series of six shots, the young are about 14 days old. They seem to be growing and maturing quite rapidly. For the two hours that we watched them, not once did the young get on to Mom or Dad's backs. They were swimming quite strongly now. Mom and Dad could be seen trying to teach them to dive and fish. Repeatedly, both adults would dive under, leaving the young by themselves on the surface, not far from our boat as though enticing the young to follow. Previously, one of the adults would always stay on the surface near the young while the other fetched food. Eventually the young also began to fish (float with head submerged) like the adults do when feeding. Also, after some time, both young started to dive. (See next shot)
