COMMON LOONS: It is now three days since my last shoot of the loon family. I estimate the babies to be about a week old now. The following 18 shots chronicle how much the young have grown and matured in three days. Where before they could hardly mount Mom's back, today, they get up and down with ease. The two of them are almost too big for her back now. Today, they also readily accept the minnows and crayfish brought in by Dad. Here Mom and Dad form a protective shield for the young as I approach with my pontoon boat. They are not too disturbed however and return to fishing, feeding and cavorting up and down Mom's back in short order after I arrive. I tried to keep my distance; however, on several occasions, the loons approached within 20 - 30 feet. See next photo.
