20090523 096 American Bittern - SERIES.jpg

Petrie Island

I had seen American Bitterns on a few occasions before, but never photographed one until this day when we found and photographed three different ones.

Above Image: Seems to be a juvenile in green grass on a small island just off shore. It was relatively easy to spot even though it took on its distinctive "you can't see me" pose.

An adult on the same grassy island as the juvenile in the top photo.

Adult Bittern in thick reeds where it is difficult to spot. (Taken at 700 mm)

Nikon D200 ,Nikkor AF-S 500mm f/4G ED VR
1/320s f/7.1 at 500.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

All great shots, especially the last one. It seems to be like our frogmouth, which does it's hiding actions, even if the surrounds are quite unsuitable ...... well done.

Terrific series with incredible detail throughout, Hank. I often hear them when visiting Petrie (sounds like a pump or mechanical device) but rarely see them. V.
