Mississippi Lake, Ontario

Three images of the Loon Family, Mom and Junior. Junior is now nine weeks old. They are wandering more away from their nesting area and seem to be advancing along the shore in the direction of our cottage.

On the day of this sighting, we had numerous feathered visitors to our dock; namely, five mallard families with young ranging from a few weeks to near adult, a Great Blue Heron, and an Osprey. My wife jokingly said, "Why do you go looking for the Loon family all the time. Just sit on the dock and they will come to you." Well wouldn't you know it, late that afternoon, there they were, about 50 meters from our shore. My Grandson and I took to the paddle boat and paddled up to the two Loons. Like in the morning, I noticed that junior wasn't doing any diving. Mom was constantly doing short dives and catching very small minnows which she brought to junior. It seemed like she was trying to teach junior to start with catching little fish. Junior didn't seem to grasp it though and seemed quite content to eat what Mom served up.

Yesterday I was out again. Again, I found the Loon family not too far from our cottage. This time both Mom and junior were constantly doing short dives. However, not once did I see either of them bring up a fish. Come to think of it, I've never seen the adults bring up a fish and eat it themselves. This makes me wonder if perhaps they catch and swallow their fish under water.

Junior doing wing exercises, just like Mom/Dad below.
