Hammer and Block Types

Note the screw in the breech block on the right. It retained the firing pin. This type of pin can and does tend to get dirty and stick. If it does, the rifle could possibly fire if the breech block was forced to close on a loaded round. The improved positive firing pin retractor made a lot of sense. Slam fires were prevented.
