This is Type 31 of Hawkins (1842, pg. 15): ALFRED REX. Cross, EADV VALD in two lines
'They vary in the mode of distributing the letters of the legend, in the spelling of the names, in the neatness of the workmanship, and in the number, form, and arrangement of the ornaments which appear
upon the reverse. The king's name is variously spelt, .. with E. JE. or AE. ; some of the letters are occasionally transposed or upside down, and the + is sometimes placed at the beginning, sometimes at the end of the legend, serving both for the christian symbol, and the last letter of the word REX.'
