Balanerpeton woodi, 11 cm long, Lower Carboniferous (Visean, Brigantian), East Kirkton Quarry, Bathgate, Scotland.

This specimen was collected by Stan Wood (1939-2012) who was the discoverer of the species. I once visited Stan in his Livingston workshop (1983) and also at his Grassmarket shop in Edinburgh. Balanerpeton is the earliest known temnospondyl. This specimen is a remarkable articulated example showing preservation of body, scales and limbs. The animal is thought to have been a salamander-like insectivore.
