San Rafael Swell in south-central Utah, approximately 75x40 miles, consists of a giant dome-saped anticline of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up millions of years ago. Since then, flash floods have carved out many valleys, canyons, gorges, mesas and buttes. Route 70 is the only road go through this region previously considered impassable.
