Lower Ninth Ward is a neighbourhood of the city of New Orleans.
The term "Lower" refers to its location farther towards the mouth of the Mississippi River.
The neighbourhood was devastated in 2005 by the flooding caused by the breach of the Industrial Canal during the Hurricane Katrina.
Almost every house in the Lower 9th Ward has been flooded to the roof and severely damaged.
Many people died, many others left and never came back.

Five years later it's still possible to see the deep scars left by Katrina in some areas of this neighbourhood. However, several reconstruction programs are in progress bringing back the life to the 9th Ward and many families are coming back to their new houses.
Among these reconstruction programs (as for example, the Holy Cross Project) the actor Brad Pitt established in 2007 the “Make It Right Foundation” to build 150 green, affordable, high-quality design homes in the neighbourhood.
