Pileated woodpecker

Bloomington, MN

She's been showing up at the suet log as the weather gets a little colder. This is the best shot I have so far, unfortunately through a dirty sliding glass door as it was getting dark. The fuzziness toward the bottom is the deck railing. I consider it nothing short of miraculous at this point that a) a pileated woodpecker is coming to my yard and b) I was able to get a photo. Hopefully it won't be long before I actually get a decent shot! "Pileated" is Latin I believe for "big-ass woodpecker." ;)

Hi Liz, what a nice surprise having a Pileated visit your yard. Yours looks to be a juvenile female, with her all black eye.
I had a juv' female that stayed with me all winter (Oct. 6th thru March 5th) last year so I truly can appreciate your glee.
My Wilma as I called her was elated when a male (Fred) showed up in Dec. and I can only hope they had a successful breeding summer.
Congrat's on your new arrival and hope you post some more pics to share!
