The first 2 1/4 miles is a well-defined trail through the forest, starting at the Climbers Bivouac trailhead (3,740 ft) and ending at the treeline (4800 ft mark). Above that, you need a climbing permit. It didn't take too long to finish that part, and I got a chance to try out my trekking poles for the first time.
