The drum is symbolic of The Salvation Army's evangelistic efforts. In the first half of the 20th Century The Salvation Army's street corner "open air" meeting was a familiar scene in every large and mid-size city in America (and worldwide). At the conclusion of the meeting the drum was laid on its side, where people could kneel, confess their sins, and accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior. The overturned drum was also a convenient place for passersby to toss coins in support of The Salvation Army.
