The Salvation Army in Appalachia (USA) struggled financially in the 1940s and 1950s due to the lengthy (and bloody) coal miners' strikes. Here, in Cumberland, Kentucky, a "dime board" was set out on the street to collect small donations to keep the work going. My parents were Salvation Army officers in nearby Harlan, Kentucky. They went more than half a year without a salary in 1950, as few people had any cash to donate. Today, there are no corps in this region of the state.
