Mono Lake sits just under 6382.9 feet in elevation near the Yosemite National Park in the Eastern Sierras. It is predicted to be around 760,000 years old, making it one of the oldest lakes in Norther America. When the water from the Mono Basin was diverted to supply Los Angeles with water, some of Mono Lake's tributaries began to dry up. As a result, the lake dropped roughly 45 feet and doubled in its salinity as there is no outlet. Now it is about two and half times saltier than the ocean. The tufa towers at the southern end of the lake are generally between 200-900 years old; however, it is possible for a tufa to grown up to an inch a year.
