The Snow Pass

Patagonia

It was day 9 of our first food ration period. The first ration was only to be 10 days long. After hiking up a gravel bar and doing some 30 river crossings, we finally made camp just after dark. We weren't even half way to our destination to receive our next ration of food. We rested. We had snow class: how to properly walk in the snow and how to self arrest when unwantingly sliding down the hill. It would be three long days before we made it up and over that pass. When we crossed it, we were drenched to the bone with rain. We were incredibly tired from battling the wind which only grew stronger as we neared the top. It threated to not only knock us off of our feet but push us down the other side in an undesirably direction.
