Pere La Chaise Cemetery Paris France

While in Paris I had the good fortune to explore Cimetiere du Pere LaChaise. The cemetery dates from the early part of the 18th century and has many historical graves. There are a lot of interesting mausoleums. Some of the doors to the mausoleums are open so you can go in to pray and explore the inhabitants of a time past. If you ever go to Paris France make sure you go to this cemetery . While exploring the cemetery I came across a very handsome gentleman. This is of course the famous lover and French journalist Victor Noir 1848-1870 his grave is a large cast bronze figure of himself . It is the custom to touch his shoes, his heart, and rub his private parts finishing off with a sweet and tender kiss on the lips. So many people have done this that the bronze is very shiny in some places. It is done to enhance fertility and bring a blissful sex life to those who touch him there. His story is a sad one Born Yvan Salmon on July 30th 1848 he went to Paris where he worked as a journalist for the newspaper "La Marseillaise" under the pseudonym Victor Noir. In 1870 he was shot dead by Prince Pierre Bonaparte, the powerful cousin of the Emperor Napoleon III during an interview at the home of the Prince. A public outcry followed and on January 12th, led by political activist Auguste Blanqui, more than 100,000 people joined his funeral procession to a cemetery in Neuilly. At a time when Napoleon III was already unpopular,Pierre Bonaparte's acquittal on the murder charge caused enormous public outrage that erupted into a number of violent demonstrations which helped set the stage for the Emperor's regime to be overthrown on September 4 1870. Following the establishment of the Third Republic, the body of Victor Noir was moved to Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. This life size bronze sculpture depicting Noir as he lay dying was sculpted by Jules Dalou. I was surprised that the grave of Isadora Duncan was just a nook in the wall. Isadora Duncan was a famous dancer she created a modern movement back in the early part of the 20th century . She was killed while driving in a Bugatti her long flowing scarf got caught in the rear wheel of the car and she was decapitated. I have also read that she had bee dragged behind the car so I don't know what the real story is . Many people who love her work remember her fondly and still visit her . The cemetery has a wonderful energy its not scary at all. There is a virtual tour of the cemetery on line at http://www.pere-lachaise.com so please check it out it's worth it. Famed glass artist Rene Lalique and his wife are resting here.
He was most famous for his lost wax method of making beautiful art glass.
This cross on his stone is made by his factory.
It is a typical piece of lalique glass.
It looks like someone tried to pry this out as it has a large crack in the glass.
