Hello everybody this is a collection of interesting pictures that I took while I was in Paris France. I have always wanted to visit the catacombs. I brought Gunars along with me and we went down the 130 steps on the spiral staircase to the underground vaults its about 20 meters below street level. The Catacomb Museum is located at 1,Place Denfert-Rochereau 75014 Paris France Tel: 33 (0)1-43-22-47-63. Just across the street from the Denfert-Rochereau metro it is in the Montparnasse section of Paris. As you enter the catacombs you see a sign that reads Arrete C'est ici L'Empire de la Mort. The whole place is an ancient limestone quarry. There are more than 6 million bodies representing 30 generations of Parisians. They were moved to the underground tunnels between 1785 and 1859. The cemeteries were overflowing with rotting corpses. Because the limestone quarries began in 60 B.C.E. with the Romans there were many tunnels and caverns made. The material haled out was used to build the city that would become Paris. There are more than 300 kilometers of tunnels. As Paris was growing the city moved toward the country and so cemeteries were dug up and the bodies ended up on the street rotting and making people sick. The city decided to dig up all the cemeteries and put the all the bones in the catacombs. There are a lot of plaques on the walls with names of the streets that are above you as well as the names of the cemeteries that the pile of bones came from. I think that if you go to Paris you have to visit this place . There are walls made of human bones. The workers made interesting designs using the bones I saw a heart made of skulls on one wall. It seemed to go on forever I was amazed that there were so many bones and all I saw was a small part of the catacombs remember that they spread over most of Paris. I would hate to get lost in there you may never get out . The museum has fenced off certain tunnels so you can't get lost and provided lighting. It costs 5 Euro's to get in and there is warnings that if you are faint of heart or if you have emotional problems its probably a good idea not to enter the sign says ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!. The stairs are a bit of a climb and you can get dizzy very quickly. At the end of the tour you have to climb the spiral staircase and you wonder if you are ever going to get out again it just keeps going and going until you reach street level and there is a guest book which you may sign if you so wish and a breath of fresh air .
