Tuff (compacted volcanic ash)

Some good examples of compacted volcanic ash, or tuff, can be seen being used as building material in the wall of St Anthony’s Chapel. The tuff can take on a greenish cast under the correct lighting conditions and some pieces there are reputed to show the marks formed by rain water while the ash was still soft.
