1992 saw the first major international initiative to address the worldwide trend in habitat and species decline. Popularly known as the “Earth Summit”, the 1992 Rio meeting saw 167 of the world’s Heads of Government sign the Convention on Biological Diversity.
A key aspect of this was the integration of conservation objectives into all programmes and policies, which has lead in turn to the development of local Biodiversity Action Plans and increased partnership between conservation organisations and local government.
