Montacute House

Montacute house is a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance Architecture.
Built about 1598 and completed in 1601, by Sir Edward Phelips who's family had lived in Montacute area since at least 1460.
They were first yeoman farmers before rising in status.
Thomas Phelips bought the site from the Cluniac Montacute Priory and passed it to his grandson, also called Thomas.
Today, Montacute house now belongs to The National Trust.

Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures. My mother's family lived in the village in the mid 1850's, and worked as masons on the estate. I never seen the house, and now your pictures are a great guide to what I would see if I ever made it there.
