PRINCE LOT HULA FESTIVAL
The Prince Lot Hula Festival, sponsored by Moanalua Gardens Foundation,
is the oldest non-competitive Hula exhibition in Hawai'i.
The Foundation, whose mission is to preserve and perpetuate the precious cultural and natural resources of these islands,
presents the Hula Festival annually in July to honor Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, who reigned as King Kamehameha V from 1863-1872.
In spite of the prohibitions against Hula in the mid-nineteenth century, Prince Lot helped to keep the culture alive
by hosting many pa'ina (parties) in Moanalua where he entertained guests with Hula and Mele (songs).
This year, twelve of the finest Halau Hula came together to share their love of dance and music
outdoors on Kama'ipu'upa'a, an authentic pa hula (hula mound).
This Gallery will grow considerably, and will be further organized by Halau,
as I continue to work on the many, many images I have of this event...
As the majority of my work is candid portraiture, if you should recognize yourself
or someone you know, please leave a message under the image or contact me by email.
