Hurricane Season

These emergency pumps just arrived at a local park, in readiness for hurricanes or flooding rains. I liked the contrast of the machinery against the iron fencing. The Mississippi River levee is in the background. The pumps are meant to supplement the huge pumps permanent pumps in the area.

You should see the big pumps. Because we are surrounded by hurricane protection and flood protection levees, heavy rains or tidal floods get trapped within the levees. Pumps in some areas of New Orleans run almost constantly to keep the city dry. The water is pumped into Lake Ponchatrain and flows to the Gulf of Mexico.

Yikes, they appear to be able to handle a lot of water. Where does it all go? Wish hurricanes weren't so destructive, else they'd be really fun.

two different kinds of protection - the beautiful gate to keep out the "rif-raf" and the ugly pumps to get the water out after the fact. I like it.

Didn't know machinery could be so pretty. The colors blend well with the bricks and the signage in the background.

Strong image, Gayle. It is a grim reminder for those of us along the Gulf Coast that our fences and machinery are very puny if the BIG one blows in.
