Presenting the quintessential Central NY half-moon cookie

Earlville, NY

For reasons I do not understand no other place on earth can reproduce the look, texture, smell, and taste of a central NY half-moon cookie! A proper half-moon cookie is essentially a flat cake with very fine vanilla and chocolate frosting.

I love them, they make life worth living. :-)

I was born in Oneonta NY (1960) There was a place called Deckers that sold half moon cookies. They were the best ever and have yet to this day found any that could compare.

I remember going on vacation in the summer to New York from California. We all looked forward to getting our "Half Moon" cookie. We went to New York every summer to visit relatives. When we came home we would tell our friends about the cookies and they would look at us like we were strange. Boy, how I miss going their.
But at least I can order them and have them sent to me.

The problem with this delightful cookie is that Noo Yawkhers and their equally ignorant brethren in NJ unimaginatively refer to the 'half moon cookie' as a 'black & white cookie.' Those from outside the city, especially those from upstate, know that the cookie is named after New York's most famous explorer, Henry Hudson, who sailed up the Hudson in 1609 on the Halve Maen ("Half Moon") in search of the Southwest Passage. Ordering a half moon cookie at a NY bakery often causes confusion, requiring you to clarify: "You know, one of those black and white cookies".
