Pileated Woodpecker's Tongue

Ottawa, Ontario. Canada

Amazing to watch this Pileated woodpecker working up close. It keeps looking around to find the right place to penetrate the bark. It may tap at a particular spot for a second or two and then change its mind and select another one and then another. I was close enough to notice the Pileated woodpecker's tongue flicking out as it probed the bark. Many people are surprised to hear that woodpeckers actually have tongues as it is seldom seen.

This is a crop from a larger image. The woodpecker was hiding behind branches and lighting was mixed and coming from behind the subject.
