Giant mushroom dwarfs cell phone

Ottawa, Ontario. Canada

Hey folks, got a hankering for some mushroom steak? No, not mushrooms on your steak. The mushroom...is your steak. A fellow photographer informed me that this large Puffball mushroom is quite edible but only before it has spored. I was told it can be sliced up like steaks and fried in some butter and garnished to taste. At this size it can feed a few people.

I walked by this big white blob a few times without realizing what it was. From a distance it looked like a deflated volleyball someone had discarded. In the picture above I placed a cell phone in front of it to give an idea of its size.

I really enjoy your bird photos, and appreciate your posts to ONTBIRDS. They help me locate and identify the birds. And I can confirm that these mushrooms are definitely edible. Each year one or two grow under the cedars on our property, and when cooked at the right stage, are very tasty.
