I kept looking for an opportunity to photograph the owl against a smooth darker background. In the wooded area it is mostly white or a mottle of white and brown (open space, snow and interspersed trees). This shot happened when the owl flew up on a log after it dug up a piece of the vole from the snow (the mostly eaten vole had dropped into the snow below the owl). That would explain the snow on its bill.
