This image was photographed moments after the hawk snatched the bird. Likely it was still alive when I took it. Notice the broken branches nearby...was the waxwing still holding onto them when the hawk snatched it?
I found a flock of 200 to 300 Bohemian Waxwings late last week. Went back to photograph them recently. The waxwings were feeding in a crabapple tree when suddenly a Sharp-Shinned Hawk swooped in and grabbed one of the birds. The hawk perched in the snow and grass with waxwing between its talon before flying onto the ice.
These birds were not easy to photograph mainly due to the many berry trees in the area. You didn't know to which tree they would go to next. However, I did spend some time observing their behaviour which I enjoy doing and this helped me pick the right spots to be.
