This is the peninsula from which there was no escape. The famous
Father Damien, a Belgian priest, spent here his life devoted to providing
spiritual support to these poor souls evicted from society for life.

The grave of Father Damien is to the left of this image. He was laid to rest in Kalawao at
the St. Philomena Church. Unfortunately none of our images show this location in closer detail...

Kalawao does not exist anymore. On the opposite side of the peninsula
is visible Kalaupapa settlement, which is still populated.
