Limahuli Garden, Sep. 2010 Limahuli is one of a kind experience for everybody interested in flora and history of Hawaiian people. Note though: this is not a flower garden, it is foremost a collection of plants endemic to these islands, introduced by Polynesians, or even later by modern time immigrants. The work of the garden society include bringing endangered plants back to life and gives a fascinating insight into the ingenuity of Polynesians who created their flourishing cultures with such minimal resources. The valley was populated for centuries in a farom of the ahupua`a systems of resource management within the local ecosystem. Limahuli Valley was part of the ahupua`a of Hā‘ena. The name “Limahuli” means “turning hands.” The creation of the preserve is to be credited to the vision and work of Juliet Rice Wichman, see the Garden's official web page for historic details. |
