Rainbows, Snow and Rain This flight brought me to the biggest Island of Hawaii, where I landed in Kona to refuel, following the club policy. On Hawaii I climbed to 12000' and took a look at Mauna Kea Observatory. On my way back I encountered a small Nimbostratus buildup in the vicinity of Kipahulu and Hana accompanied by magnificent rainbows and some dramatic dark clouds. Unfortunately, I failed to recognize the location of Lindbergh's grave, which is in Kipahulu. My (last) landing in Kahului was an adventure in itself, because the main runway 2 was blocked by a disabled Lockheed C-130 Hercules and in last minute I was diverted to the smaller runway 5. The crew of the Hercules walked out on the runway and a fire truck was standing by. |
