sex and the single salmon

Adams River, near Chase

let's talk about sex...well, sex and the single salmon, not as provocative a subject as it might sound...essentially, females hover over one spot, a sort of nest in the gravel known as a 'redd' and deposit their eggs, while a male hovers nearby and deposits his contribution, sperm, and known as 'milt', over them...it's all a bit rarefied as they never touch each other...casual too, as the sockeye don't always mate with the same partner...the eggs hatch in about 90 days, and the young fish stay in the area for up to two years before venturing out into the ocean for a couple more...most will return to the same river for spawning, after which the adults die
