seagull siesta

Fraser River near Steveston

seagulls taking a break on the Fraser River...this is an alternate image to a similar previously posted shot...it's also been changed to B&W, a conversion I am still learning how to do effectively...there are a number of techniques to create mono versions of colour digital photos, not all of them work so well...perhaps it's easier to re-activate one of the film cameras for black and white images

Nikon D90
Nikkor 18-200mm - 1/800s f/11.0 at 150.0mm iso200 full exif

other sizes: small medium large auto

Actually David, I think your B&W conversion was quite effective here. The composition is a classic and really does look even better in B&W. The sailboat went by at just the right time. ~BV~

You've so well with this strong and effective composition giving it an extra interesst by the bw. v

Beautiful compo with excellent detail and tones. Love the glow in the sails. I have a gallery where I tried to simulate BW film. I think the closest is to the chromogenic films...Kodak 400CN or Ilford XP which are smooth and grainless by nature. True BW is just different ...whatever you do...because of the grain....V

This is so well composed, David, and I like the range of tones in your
conversion. Film?? That brings back wet darkroom memories, ugh! V.

The multitude of seagulls well answers that of pickets, and the boat completes perfectly the composition. Superb B&W conversion, too. V.

You got all your sea gulls lined up and facing into the sun. Nice compressed view of the pilings leading the eye to the sailboat. Good job with the B&W. V

As mentioned by Silvia, Frank's images do show the limitations of digital b&w, but I doubt this image would be much better in film. You've got strong contrasts and a great array of tones in this photo, with a very nice perspective and a well chosen focal length. "V"

i really love how you composed! i also like the tones, the mood they bring..
there is a nice conversion program Silver from Nic adobe suite...
but then after seeing FrankB film images in B&W .. i doubt conversion may be so good as those..
John Lamb15-Jan-2011 22:16
A great day to be out on the water in a sailboat. I see the skipper has a reef in the main. Nice mood David.
