The Tongariro National Park was established in 1887. It was the first national park in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. It became a dual UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, a status which recognizes the park's cultural and religious significance for the Maori people as well as its outstanding volcanic features and spectacular landscapes. The national park has three active volcanoes located at its center. These are Mt. Ruapehu (2797 m), Mt. Ngauruhoe (2287 m), and Mt. Tongariro (1967 m) (from left as seen from Lake Taupo).
